SWIM SUIT prototype delivered

SWIM-SUIT, which has a value of 12 million Euros, relied on a contribution of about 50% from the European Commission. The project, born within the 6 Framework programme of the European Union, represents one of the SESAR programme technological pillars for the realisation of a Single European Sky.

After a three year study, SELEX Sistemi Integrati, a Finmeccanica company, presented a prototype demonstrator as the final result of SWIM-SUIT System Wide Information Management Supported by Innovative Technologies), a European research and development project in the air traffic control field.
The programme started in April 2007 and concerned the feasibility study of a system able to manage a global network and share data among all the main air traffic management operators within the European space. The principal stakeholders of this project are national service providers, airlines, airports, meteorological centres. The project will allow them to overcome their present barriers by the creation of all necessary infrastructures to integrate all kind of information. The project was managed by a consortium driven by SELEX Sistemi Integrati, and which included 20 partners (http://www.swim-suit.aero/swimsuit/partners.php) among industries, airlines, national service providers and research centres all over Europe, besides the Chinese national service provider.

The SWIM-SUIT prototype
The prototype, by integrating several existing applications, allows to test innovative technological solutions. The demo displayed today illustrates the SWIM SUIT system capabilities in four different functions.
SWIMming across the Globe: USA/Europe interoperability: This demo area highlights the important activities carried out within SWIM-SUIT relating to the interoperability of the USA and Europe SWIM environments. Such interoperability is of vital importance for the future global interoperability and the Demo area represents an opportunity to illustrate how transatlantic scenarios will be transformed through SWIM
SWIMming with the Aircraft: Collaborative Departure and Trajectory Management over SWIM: This demo introduces the important concept of Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) and extends the sharing of information through SWIM to the Aircraft. The demonstration aims to show how SWIM enables the strategic management of the aircraft trajectory, making possible the expected benefits of Trajectory-Based Operations
SWIM Opportunities: Looking beyond legacy systems: This demonstration intends to provide a practical example of interaction between different applications and highlight the advantages which will derive from a SWIM environment.
SWIM with EAD: European AIS Database: the demonstration is entirely focused on the Aeronautical Data domain and provides a practical example of direct access to EAD (European AIS Database) through SWIM.
