Vatican, Civil Protection and Rome Municipality Police secure communications network

When the Catholic Church canonizes Popes John XXIII and John Paul II later this month, the Police forces of the Municipality of Rome will benefit from secure digital communications thanks to Selex ES’s TETRA mobile radio systems. The Finmeccanica company’s system will allow operators to securely coordinate their control and security management activities over the next 14 days of Easter activities, with the canonization mass on the 27th April expecting to attract at least one million people.

Following an agreement signed with the City of Rome in September 2012, the industry developed a TETRA communication network for the Municipal Police of Rome that covers the entire city. The network includes approximately 5000 terminals, with Selex ES also providing 60 months of service management and network maintenance starting from the end of December 2013.

The network was built during 2013 and went into operation on the 1st January 2014, replacing the Municipal Police’s previous analogue systems. Already, the Municipal Police Service has used the TETRA network to manage security for a number of events hosted by the city including papal audiences and football matches at the Stadio Olimpico.

On the occasion of the canonization of the popes, the Department of Technological Innovation of Rome has asked Selex ES to develop a TETRA network which will be available for joint use by the Civil Protection department and the Municipality Police.
