Defence expenditures of NATO countries

As usual NATO published the tables containing annual Financial and Economic Data Relating to NATO Defence. The document, today issued as a Press Release produced by the Public Diplomacy Division, continues the tradition of the Committee of the Annual Review.

The document contains several tables with payments actually made or to be made during the course of fiscal years from 1990 to 2013.

The data are based on the NATO definition of defence expenditure. This definition is slightly different from the concept of defence budget of the various MoDs, but, even if the figures shown may diverge considerably from those which are quoted by national authorities or given in national budgets, some interesting relations can be detected. e.g., Research and Development expenditures related to major equipment percentages and the global R&T values can be calculated.

The document present:

  • Total defence expenditures
  • Gross domestic product (GDP) and defence expenditure annual volume change (%)
  • Defence expenditures as a percentage of GDP
  • GDP and defence expenditures per capita
  • Distribution of defence expenditures by category
  • Armed forces
